Welcome to the Halter Center
Through the Halter Shooting Sports Education Center, Hillsdale College promotes the responsible and disciplined use of firearms in shooting sports for all ages by teaching fundamental safety and marksmanship; trains youth and collegiate athletes to compete at the highest levels; fosters intelligent patriotism, self-governance, and citizenship through teaching the U.S. Constitution; and supports American shooting sport success on the world stage in partnership with USA Shooting.
Hillsdale students of all ability levels can take a variety of classes, from an introduction to shooting sports to more advanced courses.
All classes and seminars begin with an extensive introduction to firearms and range safety.
Hillsdale is unique by complementing shooting education with classes and seminars on constitutional rights.
Cottages
The Cottages at the Halter Shooting Sports Education Center
The cottages are built with the generous gifts of friends and supporters of Hillsdale College to host guests of College events such as Parents Weekends, Commencement, and shooting competitions.
Each cottage features 4 individual bedrooms with private bathrooms and entrances. So whether you’re a couple needing one room, or a large group needing to house many people, the cottages provide a great solution for your needs.
USA Shooting Partnership
In 2019, Hillsdale College became the official home of the USA Shooting National Team. Through this partnership, the Halter Center serves as host for the Junior Nationals in rifle, both Junior and Senior Nationals in International Skeet and Trap, International Paralympic Grand Prix events, Olympic training camps, Junior World training camps, and Junior Olympic Development Camps. The National Team trains at the Halter Center for the Olympics and other national and international competitions.

USA Camps
In partnership with USA Shooting, the Halter Center hosts Junior Olympic Development Camps each summer for high-level shotgun competitors between the ages of 12 and 20. Attendees choose between the two Olympic shotgun disciplines for their area of focus: International Skeet or International Trap. Junior Olympic Development Camps aim to improve shooters’ skills over the course of six days through guided instruction from current and former USA Shooting Olympians and National Team members. Sessions include individual and small group coaching with Olympic shooters, a presentation on the U.S. Constitution from Hillsdale College faculty, a sports psychology session with USA Shooting trainers, and shooting competitions.

Shooting Sports Classes
Prior experience is not required for enrollment in shooting sports classes. Each student, however, is required to take Intro to Shooting Sports, regardless of skill level.
In this class, instructors teach the National Rifle Association’s home safety course, history of firearms, firearms laws, and basic marksmanship. After completion, students can take classes in a variety of disciplines.
Please note that the range is about five miles from campus, and the school does not provide transportation. Many students carpool to class, and instructors assist in making arrangements for those without vehicles.
