John A. Halter, 1929–2021

John Halter received his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame University and his master’s degree in professional accounting from the University of Texas, Austin. From there, he attended Officer’s Commission Training and entered the U.S. Navy. Mr. Halter retired from the Navy as a lieutenant in 1969. His civilian career consisted of a variety of positions, including a certified public accountant, an investment banker, a real estate executive, and a venture capitalist and consultant. He also helped in the startup of a yacht manufacturing company. His acquaintance with Hillsdale College began by association. In 1956, he boarded a bus in Los Angeles, where he found and read a copy of The Freeman, a monthly journal that is published by the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE). Austrian School economist Ludwig von Mises, FEE’s economic advisor, was a contributor to the magazine. Mr. Halter believed strongly in free markets and was a great admirer of von Mises, who donated his personal library to Hillsdale College. Through these connections, Mr. Halter came to know Hillsdale College.

Mr. Halter enjoyed shooting and was a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and our Constitutional right to self-defense. He held a benefactor membership in the National Rifle Association. He established the John Anthony Halter Endowed Chair in American History and the Constitution, with special emphasis on the Second Amendment, at Hillsdale College. His provision for the College through a bequest established an endowment for the operations of the Shooting Sports Education Center, which bears his name. The legacy of John A. Halter will serve students and guests of Hillsdale College for years to come.
